The fatal crash on the South Side Tuesday afternoon that resulted in the death of pastor William Smith had nothing to do with religion, said spokesman Thomas Tate.

“It was a tragic accident, and our thoughts and prayers are with his immediate family and loved ones,” said Tate. “No one has anything whatsoever to do with the church.”

According to a Tribune release Thursday, Joseph Smith, the spiritual leader of the LDS Church’s largest U.S. congregation, had died March 18, nearly three weeks into his 17-year career in which he helped create the Church.

Dade authorities received a call about 1:45 p.m. of the crash at 1165 N. Roosevelt Ave.

Smith had a passenger in the truck on Roosevelt Avenue who died. The driver was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, investigators said.

Police Chief Richard Manfredi told the Tribune that the crash could have been prevented if the woman had stopped for a red light.

“The driver of the truck tried to avoid the intersection by weaving to avoid the red light and driving across the center line of the intersection,” Manfredi said in the release.

Smith had not been a member of the LDS Church for more than five years at the time of the accident, according to his obituary, which is now up at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints website. Smith is survived by two brothers who lived in New York City.

Joseph Smith led more than 25 million people to accept the faith that, according to The Mormon Tabernacle Choir, is the “most celebrated rock band on the planet.”
